About 180 Springdale Public Schools students prepared to enter the workforce May 1 at the third-annual Career and Technical Education Signing Day event at Springdale High School.
Springdale Schools Superintendent Dr. Jared Cleveland said the district is turning classrooms into launchpads through its career and technical education initiatives.
Students from Archer Learning Center, Don Tyson School of Innovation and Springdale and Har-Ber high school participated in the event.
“Our goal is to educate students and put them on a career path,” said Rodney Ellis, Springdale Schools Workforce Training director.
The event has grown by about 360% since its inception, putting 50 students on workforce pathways in both 2023 and 2024.
“Springdale has come far as a school district and business community to make this day possible,” said Bill Rogers, Springdale Chamber of Commerce president.
Ellis said the district places an emphasis on the “Three Es” of “Employed,” “Enrolled” and “Enlisted” for preparing students for careers following high school graduation.
Some 35 business and military partners were represented at the event, with about 130 students entering the local workforce and approximately 50 enlisting in the military.
The business community is grateful for all who participated in the event, Rogers said, noting signing students have the capacity to earn more than $5.5 million overall their first year.
Participating graduates working locally will bring about $4 million into the local economy, he said, while those entering military service could have some $1.5 million of economic impact.
“You are an answer to somebody’s prayers,” said Springdale Mayor Doug Sprouse, adding graduates will be meeting the needs of community and area employers.
“When you work in Springdale, whatever you do, that’s giving back,” he said. “Whatever you do in life, it matters.”
Dalton Clinkscales, co-owner of Clearwater Plumbing and general manager of Johnson Plumbing, has hired five Springdale students over the last three years, all of whom are still employed with Johnson Plumbing.
“All have made jumps faster than the state standard,” he said.
Clinkscales said he’s participated in the CTE Signing Day event for the last three years and hired another three Springdale students this year.
Senior Kaylynne Reed of Springdale High School said she just finished her first week of employment as a certified nursing assistant at Shiloh Health and Rehabilitation.
She said Shiloh sponsored her to obtain her CNA certification.
“I feel pretty awesome about it,” Reed said. “I actually get to start my life and pursue what I want to pursue.”
Rogers said the Springdale Chamber of Commerce will further support students entering the workforce by featuring an upcoming Workforce Development Camp on a to-be-determined date.
“We hope you stay here,” Rogers said, encouraging students to build lives and futures as part of the Springdale Community.
“Welcome to your future in Springdale Today,” Cleveland told students.
