For the 19-20 season, Sarah Pope has earned the award of 'Wildcat of the Year Award' for Swim & Dive. This recognizes the student-athlete who isn't necessarily the fastest in the water but the person who is all-around a great teammate both in and out of the water. Coach Nathan Whitten says, “This award is the most prestigious award in my book because someone on the team can earn it by their actions. Everyone is fair game to earning this recognition. There was a time early on in the season where I asked Sarah to help the team by competing in the 500 free. It’s a race where she normally doesn’t compete and doesn’t really train for. However, she gave me the nod to put her in. That was a moment where she really rose to the occasion and especially as a sophomore it spoke volumes to me and her teammates. Everyone knows you have to be a little crazy to swim that race because of the distance. Yet, she was willing to step out of her comfort zone and model what it means to be a team player. Another great thing about her is if you are able to attend a swim meet or a practice you can always find her mentoring her peers who are new to the sport without being asked to. She takes the initiative and that is an attribute of a leader, it’s why she is the Wildcat of the Year!” Stay tuned for more Har-Ber Swim & Dive Shout outs!
