Emma Clay, Southwest Junior High School Assistant Principal

The School Board congratulated Emma Clay on becoming assistant principal of Southwest Junior High school.

Clay is transitioning from an instructional facilitator position at Southwest, where she's served for three years. She has nine years of experience in education at Springdale Public Schools, and also taught fifth grade at Walker Elementary School for the first six years of her career.

Christy Norwood, Young Elementary School Principal

The School Board congratulated Young Elementary School for earning the STEM Model School designation from the Arkansas Division of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Young officially received the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math designation July 15 and is one of just ten Arkansas public schools to receive the recognition, according to the DESE website.

The School Board unanimously voted to approve construction contracts to replace the current Westwood and Jones elementary school buildings.

Both school buildings opened in 1959.

Superintendent Dr. Jared Cleveland said the School Board was only voting to enter into agreements with Nabholz Construction Corporation for the Westwood Elementary project and Baldwin and Shell Construction Company for the Jones Elementary project.

Core Architects will design both buildings.

The School Board likewise approved an updated master plan for the district, which includes stadium renovations at Springdale and Har-Ber high schools, a Treehouse Pantry expansion and building replacement projects at Parson Hills and Smith elementary schools.
